Healthy Indoor Air

Healthy office air is becoming more of a concern than ever before. Healthy, clean and purified breathing air allows for all people in the work environment to remain safe and protected from indoor air contamination. These contaminants can be spread quite easily if left unchecked or unfiltered. There are many methods that can be employed to reduce contamination of indoor air, of which air purifiers and electronic air cleaners are more popular options. These can be introduced into existing office structures or budgeted in on new office construction projects.

Air Filtration

Air filtration is another method most commonly used to filter common allergens, dust, pollen, etc. HEPA filters (see below) are an even better step in capturing these unwanted particles. At the end of the day, all indoor air that is to be breathed by humans, should be filtered or purified to maximize the workplace safety and general health of all those who inhabit these spaces.

Air & Healthcare Sterilization

Air and healthcare sterilization goes a step further in actually sterilizing breathable indoor air and associated equipment, tools, medical devices and instruments. This is commonly used in quality control rooms, laboratories, surgical rooms, and other spaces where the air and equipment must be maintained to an absolute quality and specification. The methods used to accommodate these desired air and healthcare sterilization conditions are listed below:

  • Ionizing Radiation
  • Dry-Heat Sterilizers
  • Liquid Chemical Sterilants
  • Performic Acid
  • Microwave
  • Glass Bead Sterilizers
  • Vaporized Hydrogen Peroxide (VHP®)
  • Ozone
  • Formaldehyde Steam
  • Gaseous Chlorine Dioxide
  • Vaporized Peracetic Acid
  • Infrared Radiation
  • and many others…

As you can see from this list, there are a number of sterilization methods that can be utilized depending on the application and specifications of each type of indoor environment that is to be used. Each has its advantage and disadvantage as to which method may be best suited and called for and may include associated costs as a determining factor.

Air Purifiers

Air purifiers are another method of cleaning air; however, these type products are designed to destroy or deactivate particles in the air rather than filtering those particles out of the air. Thus, many air purifiers are used in conjunction with mechanical air filters and electronic air cleaners. Examples of air purifiers include ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI), photocatalytic oxidation (PCO), and ozone generators.

Electronic Air Cleaners

Electronic air cleaners are highly effective filters that clean air using electricity to charge the air. These electrically charged particles in the air are attracted to the filter and get trapped. Ionizers, which are a type of electronic air cleaner, emit negative ions to trap particles. Electronic air cleaners are quite effective having a MERV (maximum efficiency reporting value) rating of up to 16 (out of a 20).

Gaseous Pollution Removal

A very specific type of filtration for indoor air quality is with gas pollution, such as removal of ozone via a carbon filter. Carbon in the filter acts as a sorbent to absorb the ozone gas emitted within a structure. Typically, these are seen most often in conjunction with electronic air cleaners to remove the small amounts of ozone generated (and thus any odor involved).

HEPA Mechanical Air Filters

Air filters are a great way to remove most large particles from the air, such as dust, pollen, and other such potential allergens. Media air cleaners are special high-capacity types that do not have to be changed as often. Because larger particles tend to settle out of the air before they can be filtered, some clients may prefer additional filtration via electronic air cleaners which can “attract” large and small particles.
