Straight cooling air conditioners are systems that only provide cooling. These systems are similar to heat pump systems in that they can be a split system (air handler separated from outside condenser) or a packaged unit (RTU) where everything is together. Straight cooling systems are different from heat pump systems however in that they ONLY provide cooling whereas heat pumps have a reverse cycle and can provide heat (hence the name “heat pump”). Additionally, straight cooling air conditioners are just as efficient if not slightly more efficient than heat pump systems. These systems are seen most often within RTUs or in split systems that use a furnace for heat.
